The Anti-Western fashion show: Redressing the Indian catwalk
In July 2014, at India's annual Couture Fashion Week, celebrity designer Sabyasachi Mukherjee showcased his collection titled 'Ferozabad' on what was hailed to be his most ambitious and indulgent catwalk setting yet. Mukherjee, who regularly draws upon nostalgia for India's past in designing his collections as well as his catwalk presentations, transformed the runway into a series of grand train carriages. Decked out with leather berths, brass fittings, flower-patterned wallpaper, glass chandeliers, velvet drapes, vintage rugs, formal dining, a claw foot bath, and a private bar, the train carriage resembled, at least in their opulence and decor, the first-class interiors of India's imperial railways from the time of British rule.
